The Mitter Gate

The Mitter Gate (“Mittertor“) was built in the 13th century. In the 19th century, it was rebuilt. Originally, the Middle Gate had been constructed with a saddle roof, but now it shows a tent roof like the other gates of the city - the Danube Gate and the Altmühl Gate. On the inner side of the gate, one can have a look at a fresco painted by Georg Lickleder in1904. The original painting of the fresco can be found in the German National Museum in Munich. The scene depicted shows the capture of the Austrian occupation led by Matthias Kraus on December 12, 1705. During the war of the Spanish succession, he defended Kelheim against the Austrians who occupied the city. To honour his heroic deeds during the war, the Matthias Kraus monument was built in 1905 and located in front of the Danube Gate.
